Suska Mackert creates by collecting, arranging, and rearranging — like an archivist or archaeologist. She inscribes objects, draws and photographs, measures, locates and preserves, sorts in and out. She questions established ideas and clichés related to tradition, society, values, memory, and everyday life. The subject of her work is often jewelry and artifacts in the broadest sense. She separates and combines what was previously unrelated, sometimes quite literally using scissors, cutters, needle stitches, or adhesive tape — only to separate and recombine it again one day, soon or perhaps much later. Open propositions.
In all its ambiguity, the joint (the fugue) is an important guiding motif in her work. Mackert seeks the in-between space, the gap — as it functions in architecture to compensate for movement within materials. At the same time, she imitates endlessly recurring themes that develop into complex subjects, much like fugues in cantatas. Carefully, attentively, precisely, and with determination, she lays down layer upon layer, unafraid of the pull that these repetitions generate.
